The Ablest Privilege Activity: An Active Learning Classroom Exercise

Boyas Jf

Social work educators are at the forefront of providing experiential learning opportunities for student preparation and the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) reaffirmation standards underscores the need for social work students to be culturally competent practitioners. As technological advances result in the proliferation of online teaching modalities, active learning strategies must also be relevant for students in courses that do not meet in traditional face-to-face classrooms. This manuscript introduces an active learning exercise and analyzes statements from this activity titled, “The Ableist Privilege Activity.” In the activity, students explore their privileges associated with cognitive and physical abilities. Results from student statements are used to develop practical implications in face-to-face and online classroom settings.
