The DFIG based wind turbine with variable speed feature is the most popular wind power generator in the wind power industries. To implement a DFIG, the stator is directly connected to three-phase grid and the rotor is fed via three phase back to back ac-dc-ac converter. Generally various kinds of faults occur in a system. When a fault occurs in a DFIG, it causes the damage of the converter circuitry. In order to avoid this damage of the system and to protect the system, the identification should be done at an earlier stage. Hence an accurate and efficient identification helps in protection of the system from abnormality. In addition to the identification of these faults, their classification should also be done accordingly such as L-L, L-G, L-L-G and L-L-L-G faults. In this paper a DFIG connected to wind turbine is considered and its faults are analysed i.e. the faults are identified and classified using Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). The entire work is carried out in Matlab/Simulink platform.
